Kids and Dental Health: Back To School, Back to a Cleaning Routine!

Aug 20 • 2 minute read

Can you believe it's back-to-school season already? While backpacks are getting filled and new schedules are taking shape, one thing shouldn't change: keeping those awesome smiles sparkling clean! As we get back into a normal routine and the lazy days of summer fade away, let’s keep our kids' smiles brighter than ever!

Tips for keeping little pearly whites clean and healthy:

  • Morning/Night Routines:  We know mornings can be a whirlwind, but a good dental routine is a superhero for healthy teeth. Here at Mill Point Dental, we want to make brushing and flossing fun and achievable, even for the busiest little students. Having a set routine for morning and night makes it easy for kids to remember to brush and floss.

  • Turn it into a Party: Play their favorite two-minute song while they brush. Make silly faces in the mirror while flossing. Brushing and flossing can be a blast, not a chore! Keeping the behavior tied to a song is also a great way to ensure they are brushing their teeth for long enough. This helps remove buildup and prevent cavities.

  • Make it a Family Mission! Brushing together as a family is a great way to set a good example and ensure everyone gets a thorough clean. But here's a secret weapon: kids love to mimic both grown-ups and older siblings. Have a big brother or sister lead the brushing routine, or let the younger one be the "teacher" for a day. This playful power struggle can be a great motivator for consistent brushing and dental hygiene!

  •  Reward the Routine: Create a sticker chart or reward system for consistent brushing and flossing. A small prize at the end of the week can be a fun way to incentivize. If you can, see if these other tips work first before adding in a reward. OR make the reward an option if they go and do all the steps of their routine on their own for a whole week.

Don't forget the power of healthy choices! Pack lunches and snacks that are kind to teeth. Think fruits, veggies, and cheese instead of sugary treats. Even lots of carb-heavy choices can create plaque, so think fiber and protein first.

Speaking of superheroes, remember, regular dental checkups are key to catching any problems early on. Think of Mill Point Dental as your sidekicks, waiting in the wings and ready to help keep your child's smile healthy and strong!
